When evaluating limits, when can we substitute the limit value in, or when shouldn't we?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once u simplify ur limit, it'll be easier to explain if u gave an example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when the equation can't be simplified anymore and is 0/0 form or 1/0 form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you plug in the limit value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean in any question asking us to evaluate limits, should we always substitute first before doing anything else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah always substitute when you get a answer that equals to 1/0 or 0/0 then simplify if you can and then try to plug it in again if you still get the same answer then limit does not exist.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if u can simplify or cancel anything out, do it, then plug in the limit value either way works, but if u get infinity limits, thats where u cant do direct substitution (sometimes)

OpenStudy (zarkon):

when the function is continuous at that value
