I'm confused. How does (-x^1/2)(3x^2) yield 6x^3??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6x^3 is what I meant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Doesn't, 2x * 3x^2 yields 6x^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, that's not what www.calcchat.com is showing.

The workout of the problem is on the website. I'm using the 9th Edition (first possible selection in the drop down box), Chapter 2, Section 3, Exercise 9. I just need to know how they got 6x^3 from multiplying those two quantities.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2x*3x^2= -6x^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unfortunately that wasn't what I was asking. I need to know how the author of the book multiplied (-x^(1/2)) * (3x^2).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well x^1/2 * 3^2= -RAD x * 3x^2 not sure how they got that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -3x 5/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in other words the answer is not 6x^3
