what is the best way to take notes(im guessing this is sort of writing)
Learn the Pitman's system of shorthand in which each sound has a specific symbol. For e.g., the sound "k" has a certain specific symbol. So the "k" sound in kite, cat or chemistry will be represented by the same symbol. Your knowledge of the English grammar, spellings etc. has to be good to use this system. Don't do Verbatim you will end up with pages of notes!
Everyone has a different style. I myself don't take notes because I find listening more effective. I'll just write down a word here or there. Some people like charts or relating everything to whatever is relevant. Or you could go section by section, as long as you get the core of what you are taking notes on. The best way to take notes, is the way that helps you retain or understand more information.
Learn to pick out the main idea of what the professor is saying so that you can avoid excessive notes. What really helps a lot is if the professor happens to give you a syllabus with specific objectives on it for each test, so you know when he or she is straying from an objective and you can just kick back and listen or zone out for a bit. Also, if learning real shorthand is too daunting (it looks scary to me) just making up your own can help. That's what I did.
I agree with you, Ashira. But I also think is helpful to write down a specific detail every so often, one that may easily be forgotten or possibly show up later as a good test question. It is very important to title and date notes. I also make titles of separate sections or topics in a given discussion. Bullet points work great as the lecture goes on, but if you are taking notes from a book chapter, it's helpful to summarize every few paragraphs in a sentence or two. Try not to write too much, unless the topic is challenging or hard to understand. Even writing just a brief overlay of the subject may spark the memory when later studied. Sometimes writing helps the brain to retain information, even though you may not need to reference them. This is true in my case. I strongly recommend note-taking. I hope this helped! Good luck with everything and please ask if you have any further questions. I'm more than happy to help! :)
I would record Lectures on Iphone ITalkPro Premium, that way you have record. Take notes as needed. That way you concentrate on Lecture and take right notes with undue strain. Lecture Podcasts if available should be taken advantage of.
Diagrams, Colour-coding, Short hand notation, Don't use too many conjunctions, Bullet points, Variables, Pictures/Symbols, Five words per bullet point limit.
Depends on how efficient you want to be with your note-taking. Personally, I think that recording lectures is a waste of time, because you have to listen to them again later, and so are pictures/symbols because they take way too much time. If you want to get a good mark want to take notes EFFECTIVELY, write down ONLY the following: -things the teacher says "might" be on the exam or could "be a great exam question" -what the teacher tends to repeat every class and tries to "drive into your brain" -identify overarching themes of the class (can usually be found in the course syllabus, teacher will usually emphasize them on the first day of class) and write down how what the teacher is talking about relates to these themes -only write down things the teacher says that you NEED to know (for an exam or test) -do NOT write/type out every single word the teacher says (what 50% of students who think they are being "smart" and going the "extra mile" do) -write in FULL SENTENCES that you will be able to understand later, instead of using shorthand that you will have to reinterpret later Follow these steps, and you will be well on your way to success. Stay posted for more great tips!
thanks guys
