Is it still common to use the formal 'nin' or is it preferred to use 'ni' in spoken Chinese?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's preferred "nin" when meeting someone for the first time. Yet we always ask "Did you eat dinner yet if so what did you have?" If we are friends.

People in Beijing use 您 more than in the rest of the country. They think it sounds classy. 您 is always preferred, no matter where you are, when addressing a teacher, a doctor, or an official.
