OpenStudy (erik):

how do i factor 3x^2-2x

OpenStudy (amistre64):

take out common factors ... in this case an x

OpenStudy (erik):

but it will give me the same

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the same what?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

factoring doesnt change values; it only changes the way something looks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

spose i "factor" a $10 bill $1, $1, $1, $1, $1, $5 same value, just a different appearance

OpenStudy (amistre64):

3x^2 - 2x simply splits apart into: x (3x-2) and thats as far as you would prolly want to factor it right?

OpenStudy (erik):

so would this be a prime

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no, a prime is something that cant be split apart

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if the terms of the polynomial have a common "factor"; you can always split it apart

OpenStudy (erik):

thank you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome

OpenStudy (erik):

so is 4x^2+x a prime?
