-8 < -3x - 5 < 7.... is the correct answer 1 < x < -4?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-8 < -3x - 5 < 7 -8+5 < -3x < 7+5 -3 < -3x < 12 -3/(-3) > x > 12/(-3) ... Note: the signs flip when you divide all sides by a a negative number 1 > x > -4 -4 < x < 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

*a negative number

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

don't forget the rule to flip the inequality sign whenever you divide by a negative number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now, how would you graph the solution on a number line?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Draw the number line. Then draw an open circle at -4 and draw an open circle at 1. Then shade everything between these two open circles (don't fill in the circles)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok that's what i thought; thanks!
