Mr. Doodle’s grade distribution over the past 3 years for a course in college algebra is shown in the chart below. Grade number A 45 B 180 C 110 D 95 F 65 I 5 If Jane plans to take a college algebra course with Mr. Doodle, determine the empirical probability that she receives an A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Empirical prob is the same as "experimental" which is obtained from collected data. So the prob of an "A" is 45/the total number of grades. Find the sum of the number of grades. Divide 45 by that number. OK?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so add all the numbers up and divided it by 45?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45 divided by the um 45 is the top number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok what numbers am i using to divide 45 by?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The sum of the grades. Add all of the A's, B's, etc. That will be the Total number of grades for the three years. There were 45 "A"'s so then 45 divided by the total number of grades. OK?
