Could someone take me step by step through a limit problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x^3-4x^2+x+6)/x+1

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

limit as x -> ??

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as x approaches -1

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

well, do you know calculus?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Today is day one, I understand that I need to remove the denominator, but I am unsure how to factor out an X+1 from the numerator.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok just checking cause with derivatives there is another way of taking this limit. however, you can use polynomial division or synthetic division would work here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got an acceptable answer with long division, but I need to touch up on my synthetic. How did you identify whether or not to factor or divide?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

in this case since the larger degree polynomial is on top, always divide of course factor whenever possible so things may cancel

Thank you for your help

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

your welcome
