OpenStudy (kelsie):

how do you evaluate 16 -1/2 with only a fraction answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

32/2-1/2=31/2. You just have to convert 16's denominator to a 2 by multiplying the numerator and dominator by 2. So 16/1 becomes 32/2. Then it's just like regular subtracting.

OpenStudy (kelsie):

can you explain it any diffently? im confused by what you mean,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry; in subtracting fractions both fractions have to have the same denominator (ex. the 2 in 16/2 is a denominator). 16 is the same as 16/1, and like I said, to subtract 1/2 from it, 16/1 has to have the denominator of 2 also. To get that you multiply 16/1 by 2/2. That makes 32/2 (which is still 16/1, just with a denominator of 2). I might have just said to much again though, I'm sorry if I make it too confusing.

OpenStudy (kelsie):

oh! i gotcha now, thanks so much. no worries!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha, all right, no problem
