Hi do you know what mitochondria is (im obviously horrible at this kinda stuff)
Its okay, its better to ask than not know. The mitochondria is an organelle in which respiration takes place, they generate energy for the cell by producing ATP. Also mitochondria are involved in a range of other processes, such as signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, as well as the control of the cell cycle and cell growth (but the main part is the energy generation).
There are some good descriptions of other cell parts here: http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html and here: http://biology.clc.uc.edu/courses/bio104/cells.htm
thanks!
Not a problem :)
what is a rough and smooth ER
The "rough" appearance of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) results from the presence of ribosomes that are bound to the cytosolic side of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. The presence of ribosomes on the RER indicates that it is involved in protein synthesis. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) has no such bound ribosomes and is not involved in protein synthesis. However, the SER is involved in cholesterol metabolism, membrane synthesis, detoxification, and other cell processes.
Thats a bit to advanced for my understanding can you just tell me their main functions (once again sorry for lack of biology skills)
rough= protein building smooth= lipid building
@ Hcgturtle, yep the rough makes proteins, the smooth does make lipids but it also makes a bunch of other stuff (like helps in metabolism)
cool, thanks, are you a teacher because im in 7th grade and your better than mine
Haha, no I'm not a teacher, and I doubt I'm better than yours, I don't think I would have a hope in teaching a whole class
yep
at the one about smooth er
how do you know all of this then?
Haha, well I learnt it. Though awhile ago, mostly I just grab the answer off the internet
you have some really good sources then
Well they're not all that hard to find, I suppose it needs a little understanding but Wikipedia is great.
But cant anyone post random junk to wikipedia?
sorry you probably need to help people with questions! (:
the best resource is the lecture book. even though they cost 200bucks for a new one. :(
its okay, well its true that people can post random junk on wikipedia but alot of people get really annoyed when the wrong thing is posted on wiki so they change it be correct, the end result is that wikipedia is pretty accurate. The best way to tell if it is accurate or not is to check the articles references, if they reference journal articles and things then chances are the article is pretty accurate. You're quite right Hcgturtle, the best reference is your books! Especially if your teacher has told you a specific one, that way it is at your year level.
Im gonna tell my teachers that and hope they let me use it for assignments
Hmm probably better not to, its a good starting point for assignments but its always better to double check it and don't use it as a primary reference.
thought so ( :
Yeah, its a bummer but atleast its great for background and reading if you can't work something out.
whats a chloroplast?
Hehe, are you doing your homework? It only occurs in plant cells and is where light energy is converted into chemical energy. So uses the sun to get energy that it can use.
yes i am doing my homework (:
I hope I'm not giving you all of the answers lol
not really well sort of i just ask you for the basic answer then do research on that more in depth.
Great! Good work! I hate it when people just ask for answers and just write it down for their homework, happy you do more research :)
Thanks when you go to an advanced studies school their EXTREMELY strict about cheating and what not.
Mmm, that they are
Thanks for the medal! PS: do you like my picture for my profile!
No worries, thought you deserved it for doing more research :) Yeah, who doesn't like pirates of the Carribean! :P
haha! i love it!!!
Are you here everyday? Your a big help. (that means your awesome and im an idiot)
No not an idiot, gotta keep in mind alot of us here are just older, that's why we know more :) Most weekdays (I usually have it running in the background of my computer when I study)
Yeah im only 12 so...
Hehe, you make me feel ancient, I'm 20 :)
Thats not old at all! you will barely be old when im that age!
Lol, I'll be 28 :O (and hopefully a great scientist by then!)
If you are and you find some sort of species can you name it after me? (:
New species i meant
Haha! Well there are lots of new species where I live, I once met a guy who named this creepy spider after dracular! But I don't think I will be that type of scientist lol
Where are you? America?
Nope, Australia
Sorry gotta go and Australia is awesome! See ya
bye bye, thanks!
