How do you factor the following so that the variable appears once: x+Ax (please explain)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is common to each term so we can write x (1 + A)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

....so if it was x+0.08125x it would factor to x(1+0.08125)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok! wait...what about.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2u sub n-1 -.85u sub n-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that doesn't have the same variable appear....does it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm - this may be an american thing - what do u mean by sub

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it means subscript, so like a little n-1 at the bottem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can just subtract this - like 3x - 0.5x = 2.5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one more question, is x(1-.18) and (1-.18)x the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 u sub n-1 - 0.85 u sub n-1 = 1.15 u sub n-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok! i see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes they are the same - they both mean x times 1 - .18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thanks!! you rock!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no probs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i used too - though i'm a bit old for it now!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha! ;)
