I've tried to learn HTML but I don't know how to move past what W3Schools have in their tutorials. Anyone have an idea how I can improve?

Try and learn CSS as well. Then just make a small site portfolioing yourself?! If you can do then try and make it more fancy using jQuery. (Javascript?!)

There is a great video lecture site for it : http://www.thenewboston.com/

W3Schools has a lot of tutorials to offer. They cover a wide range of things. In web based programming, I started out with HTML and then moved into CSS. Once I understood CSS, I moved towards JavaScript. After I got a good understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript I got into server side programming languages like PHP and ASP/ASP.NET.

Also, if you are serious about HTML and web development, I suggest you get Microsoft Web Platform Installer 3.0. It is free from microsoft. It also comes with Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, which is a another good tool for building ASP.NET web sites. It also installed MSSQL express database. It is a great tool for web development. Get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx

well since you have learned HTML then you can go ahead by learning other things like CSS , Javascript, PHP and then you can improve yourself by practicing what you have learned because practice will help you to improve.

I've really no intent in getting those MS software you guys mentioned because I'm on Ubuntu. They won't work. I've already started on CSS and Javascript but not PHP. As it happens, you need a server that can interpret PHP to be able to learn it properly. So, if I were to make a site portfolio of sorts where can I go to? I mean, I can't use Wordpress for that - or stuff of the sort. I think, I need to get a host or something. Is that right? And if I were to go for a host and stuff, I'd want to have something for free for now. Suggestions, please?
