OpenStudy (sriram):

We say that sound travels faster in denser medium, but when we cover our ears tightly with our hands (having solid bones and liquid blood which are denser than air) we cant hear anything . Why is it so??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've answered it in the maths section, take a look at my reply.

you r looking at 2 different cocepts: velocity and amplitude amplitude is intensity i.e. the reason why we arent able to hear anything when we cover our ears tightly with our hands. amplitude decreases in this case because energy is lost in vibration of particles i.e solid particles. frankly i could not find a quantitative relationship between velocity and amplitude : )
