how do you write abs(x) as a piecewise function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that would be x= | -x for x< 0 | x for x => 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

basically the piecewise rule says to take the negative of the x values when it is less than 0, thus making it positive. Otherwise you just take x as it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH thank you:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me with another?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

abs(x+3)-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = | -x for x < 3 | x for x >=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what happlened to the -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, put a -2 on each of those

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = | -x -2 for x < 3 | x - 2 for x >=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OHH okay thanks:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait why does the 3 not change to -3 on one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, a little distracted ...your correct. ARg! you do need to account for the 3 inside as well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol HAHA , why are u so distracted?thanks any way

OpenStudy (anonymous):
