Why was the Boston Massacre so significant?

In the broadest way, this incident demonstrated the heightening tensions between the colonists and the crown. I believe that it started as verbal harassment (pellet talking) by the colonists and then became rock/fruit throwing (Palestinians) which precipitated the soldiers to fire into the crowd. Five people died, which further demonstrated that the crown was losing it's grip on the populace of the Americas.
