what does the mitochondria do?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

The mitochondria is an organelle in which respiration takes place, they generate energy for the cell by producing ATP. Also mitochondria are involved in a range of other processes, such as signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, as well as the control of the cell cycle and cell growth (but the main part is the energy generation).

how big is the mitochondria then ?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Hmm I have not thought about it before, quite small I imagine! its only a small fraction of the cells size.. let me go see if I can find a value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thanks

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Here we are its between 0.5 micrometers - 10 micrometers. From http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/biology/bio4fv/page/mito.htm It would change according to which cell it is in, what stage of division and a bunch of other factors.

thanks for the answers

OpenStudy (trancenova):

No worries :)
