Find the Cardinality of the set: {48,49,...,189,190}

OpenStudy (amistre64):

190-48

OpenStudy (amistre64):

possibly +1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or -1 ... that odd ball tends to throw me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why do you subtract 190 from 48?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

cardinality means, how many numbers are there

OpenStudy (amistre64):

these are numbered 1 apart from each other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand. But I have to show the general term as well

OpenStudy (amistre64):

general term?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

just for dbl chk; lets assume a set of 3,4,5 5-3 = 2, so add 1 to get "3"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, this is an example {2,4,6,8,10...2n..} {1,2,3,4,5,...n...}

OpenStudy (amistre64):

this set is finite since it starts and stops in a given range

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that and i cant recall clearly what general term means :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhhh okay!!!! So I would just subtract 190 from 48 to get the cardinality?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes, and add 1, as my dbl chk indicated

OpenStudy (amistre64):

4,5,6,7 7-4 = 3, but there are 4 terms so add 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did you get 4,5,6,7, from?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

from my head, it was to see if subtracting the first from the last was accurate or if i needed to modify the results since there is always one little straggler that never gets counted

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in other words, practice on something that is more doable than 150 numbers :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if it works on a set of 3 or 4, itll work on a set of 1 to 50000000 if need be
