You're right. You take each term and raise it to the 4th power. Anytime you have terms in parentheses, you multiply the exponents. Here you can see why it works... 3^4 = 3*3*3*3 = 81 \[(a^{1})^{4} = a^{1}*a^{1}*a^{1}*a^{1} = a^{4}\] \[(b^{3})^{4} = b^{3}*b^{3}*b^{3}*b^{3} = b^{12}\]
