@laura: note that cot and tan are in a reciprocal relationship, so although raheen's answer is correct, it it might be more clearly written as\[\cot \frac{\pi}{4}=\frac{1}{\tan \frac{\pi}{4}}=\frac{1}{1}=1\]Note that tan(pi/4)=1

I did not want you to think that cot and tan are always equal. if a different radian/angle measure was used, you would no tget the correct answer by equating the cot and tan.
