What is the largest possible value of this set of numbers? 2, 5, 6, 8, 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 ?

hero (hero):

Is that the same question as what I thought this was going to be? I thought this was about finding averages

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was trying to generalize the question. It was actually two separate questions. The first questions was "EXPLAIN how you would find the answer to: The average of five different positive whole numbers is ..." The next question was "What is the largest possible value of any of these numbers?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how to find the average. I just don't know what largest possible value means.

hero (hero):

I think you have to add them all up to find the largest possible value

hero (hero):

But don't quote me on that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so it's basically the sum of all the numbers? I was worried that the largest would be found by multiplying them all?

hero (hero):

Seems like a trick question to me. If they mean what is the largest value amongst each individual number, then obviously 9 is correct. But if they mean to simply add them, then that would be the largest value.

hero (hero):

It's not that clear of a question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree. Our teacher is a pain in the butt!

hero (hero):

But if I had to answer, I'd just say 9
