When making a box plot can the box extend further then the last data point? If so how is it shown? Like the last number in my set is 98, when i did the box plot im pretty sure the box extends to 99.5.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Do you mean when you are making it specifically with a program? Are you sure 98 is your highest/lowest data point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. The numbers are 55, 73, 75, 80, 80, 85, 90, 92, 93, 98

I got the max to be 98. But then Q1-Q3=17. Mean=82.5. So 82.5+17=99.5??so the box goes to far right?

Any ideas?

Okay, so Q1 and Q3 are quartiles, not the outer values. -->To create a box-and-whisker plot, you start by ordering your data (putting the values in numerical order), if they aren't ordered already. Then you find the median of your data. The median divides the data into two halves. To divide the data into quarters, you then find the medians of these two halves <-- thats your quartiles (Q1/3) http://www.purplemath.com/modules/boxwhisk.htm You are thinking of the 'whiskers', the range, which has the biggest and smallest values. hmm does that help? |dw:1315802495561:dw|
