Probably the best approach to take in starting an open course is to be willing to unlearn your previous experiences as a student. Many of the assumptions that you've formed based on traditional education will make an open online course a nightmare :). I encourage you to see this as an experiment. Jump in when you have time. Post, share. Don't feel like you have to make sense of it all. Enjoy the chaos that leads to learning!

In a way its a leap of faith, especially for long time educators.  But that is why it is so liberating.  How did you come to think of this bodacious concept Gsiemens?

Preetha - bodacious? I have't heard that applied to open online courses before :). The idea actually came as a consequence of an open conference I ran at University of Manitoba in 2007: http://umanitoba.ca/learning_technologies/connectivisim/ . The experience was very helpful in recognizing the enormous value that people add to courses when instructors take off controls and constraints. That served as a basis for setting up CCK08...in fact the format of CCK08, with the addition of the Daily, was exactly like OCC2007. Things sort of evolved based on feedback from participants.
