what is a cell membrane?
It is the defining structure of the cell. It is composed of phosphlipids, proteins and various other substances. It separates the inside from the outside of the cell, which allows for the establishment of chemical and electrochemical gradients. A majority of life functions will also occur at the surface of the membrane.
All cells are surrounded by a cell membrane, its a thin structure with tiny openings(pores) that covers the cell and holds it together. if you want to know THE CELL MEMBRANES FUNCTIONS, the cell membrane has three main functions: * It protects the inside of the cell and separates it from the external environment. *It gives the cell its shape. * It controls what substances pass in and out of the cell through its pores. It prevents harmful material from entering the cell, and lets in all the substances that the cell needs to function properly, such as oxygen and food. hope that helps..!! =)
The cell membrane is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment.[1] The cell membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and controls the movement of substances in and out of cells.[2] It consists of the phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. Cell membranes are involved in a variety of cellular processes such as cell adhesion, ion conductivity and cell signaling and serve as the attachment surface for the extracellular glycocalyx and cell wall and intracellular cytoskeleton.
this is cool website nemo2011.. thanks! :)
The cell membrane is also known as the "plasma membrane". Remember there are essentially two "borders" a cell has. The first is the cell wall and the second is the plasma membrane. The plasma membrane is found exterior to the cell wall. I would recommend googling an image of a cell to better understand where the membrane can be found!
