What is the difference between saying undefined or no solution?

hero (hero):

Undefined means that there is no such value for the given function. No Solution means that two or more functions exist, but they don't have a common value or point associated with them

hero (hero):

Something like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you give me an example of something that has no solution

hero (hero):

two parallel lines have no common point associated with them

hero (hero):

y = 2x + 3 y = 2x + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0/2 = no solution 2/0 = undefined

Okay, I understand now. I cannot believe I did not know this and I am in Calculus. Thank you so much for clearing that up.

OpenStudy (zarkon):

find all real solutions to \[x^2+1=0\]

hero (hero):

If you set them equal to each other and tried to solve for x, you would get no solution: 2x+ 5 = 2x+ 3 0 = 2 Since zero can't equal 2, then no solution

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

@DoodleTech If you have 2x=0, then the solution is x = 0/2 = 0, or simply x = 0 So your first example is a solution (instead of "no solution")

Thanks everybody, this is helpful
