Just to see if anyone knows how to do this problem: -|x|

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

|x| = x if x >= 0 and -x if x < 0 -|x| = -x if x >=0 and x if x < 0

Well, my Algebra teacher said the answer was: The absolute value of the opposite of x. Do you agree?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

I assume by 'opposite of x' s/he means -x. I which case I don't agree and what ybarrap says is right. For example consider x = 2. Then -|x| = -2, which is the 'opposite'. But if x = -2, then -|x| = -|-2| = -2, which is not the 'opposite'.
