Can somebody help me with "three-link" chain rule? I'm having a hard time with "three-link" chains: Find the derivative of g(t)=tan (5-sin2t) Why is it called "three-link" chain anyway?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

tan() sin() thats 2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

well, 2t might be the third

OpenStudy (amistre64):

t 2t -sin(2t) 5-sin(2t) tan(5-sin(2t))

OpenStudy (amistre64):

why its has to be restricted to 3, i got no idea, might be material specific tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh.. so what is the formula?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

depends on what it is your trying to accomplish; derivatives i assume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f'(g(h(x))*g'(g(h(x))*h'(x)?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

tan() = sec^2() 5-sin(2t) = cos(2t) 2t = 2 sec^2(5-cos(2t)) * 2sin(2t)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its like peeling an onion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did the 5 from (5-cost(2t)) come from?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

tan (5-sin(2t)) <-- you posted it in the problem

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the innard in the chain rule stay the same; what pops out is the derivative of the innards

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i see what your confused about, i mistyped it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that helpful Denebel?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

tan (5-sin(2t)) sec^2(5-sin(2t)) * cos(2t) * 2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

.... im integrating and derving in me head for some reason

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh man zarkon is here, maybe he will find something wrong with my work

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lagrange did a good write up :)

OpenStudy (zarkon):

Does that worry you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Notation 1) Where did this come from? 2) Where did this go?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

Don't make a mistake and I wont point it out.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i worry when noone finds something wrong :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh man you sound like my highschool algebra teacher

OpenStudy (zarkon):

ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mr. Willmore ?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

My title starts with Dr.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

mine starts with, "hey you" and ends with "get off my lawn!"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.. I'm still lost lol Ok I see (-cos(2t)) came from, but where did d(2t) come from?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2t is part of the innards of sin()

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mine starts with Captin

OpenStudy (amistre64):

crunch?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, in all seriousness it starts with Bond.......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

James Bond

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would you know that the 3 "links" are tan (), 5-sin2t, and 2t? Why couldn't it be sin2t instead of 2t?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just because
