How do you write inequalities for two numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to write two inequalities that compare to a pair of numbers. How do I do it?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what kind of numbers are you dealing with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A positive and a negative. 7 and -6.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ANY negative number is ALWAYS smaller than ANY positive number So -6 is less than 7 (since -6 is negative and 7 is positive) This means that \[\Large -6 < 7\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to write it in the order you have, flip everything around \[\Large 7 > -6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the inequality for 7 and -6 would be 7>-6 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D Ok, thank you Jim. ^____^b

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
