How are species related to the concept of biodiversity?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Biologists most often define biodiversity as the "totality of genes, species, and ecosystems of a region".

Ok: Biodiversity (n): diversity among and within plant and animal species within an environment. So if you have a bunch of species of the same kind of animal then that animal would be considered biodiverse. This is a kinda basic concept, and thus hard to elaborate on; you just have to understand what the words mean.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Yes, biodiversity is a 'measure of variation' within the organisms of an area. -it is also a fairly ambiguous word. Species is the easiest way to measure biodiversity to a useful level. We could go out and find the genetics of a whole ecosystem and hence the genetic diversity but that would take too long. We could measure things at a family level and that might be fine too. Here is where it relates to scale and ultimately the question you want to ask.
