1/3(2x-8)=4

OpenStudy (jamesj):

is the LHS \[\frac{1}{3} (2x - 8) \ \ OR \ \ \frac{1}{3(2x-8)}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first one !

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Ok, so first, multiply both sides by 3 3/3 (2x - 8) = 3x4 = 12 i.e., 2x - 8 = 12 Now 2x - 8 + 8 = 12 + 8 i.e., 2x = 20 Hence x = 20/2 = 10. Clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x= 10 ?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

You can verify this by substituting into the equation. Here as x = 10, then 1/3(2x - 8) = 1/3(2 . 10 - 8) = 1/3 ( 20 - 8 ) = 1/3 . 12 = 12/3 = 4 Which is the original equation, so x = 10 is indeed a solution. I recommend you now take a piece of paper and rework the problem, copying each of my steps in the earlier post and making you understand them. Then do it again with a new piece of paper and redo it without looking at your earlier version. Learning math is like learning a language: you need to repeat things so they sink in.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

by the way, it's polite to give me now a 'good answer'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i already know !

OpenStudy (jamesj):

so where is it? What a waste of time.
