Why did the ancient Egyptian pharaohs erected such huge and inspiring monuments and temples
Because they believed that in the afterlife, they would live in their temples with all of the possessions inside of them. That's why they kept their organs and body inside the temple after death, along with all of their favorite things.
Because they could!
they did it as an offering to the gods. for respect for the dead and also for priests to have more control over population
In Ancient Egypt, Pharaohs were thought of as "gods." Pyramids were built to house the corpse of the Pharaoh after he/she was dead. Egyptians practices mummification to preserve the corpse after death. Their belief was that there was life after death. In the Egyptian myth of Osiris and Isis, Osiris was killed, chopped up into little pieces and thrown into the Nile River. Isis recovered almost all of his pieces and preserved his corpse. Osiris was resurrected and so the Egyptians believed that if their Pharaoh's corpse was preserved, he would be resurrected to lead Egypt into more years of prosperity. Statues were built to worship and honor the gods as well as Pharaohs. Statues often included a cat's head, or dog's head. The Sphinx for example has the body of a lion and the head of a Pharaoh. To summarize Egyptian Pharaohs erected pyramids and statues because they thought they were gods. The Egyptians complied because it was part of their religion to honor their Pharaoh/god. Egyptians centered their life around religion, without the guidance of their gods/Pharaoh, they would be lost.
the beggining of the trend of building pyramids can be traced back to the time when a very influential priest Imhoteph built a stacked structure which was a crude form of pyramids found today. it was sort of a staircase to heaven. the pharoh in his lifetime had to perform certain duties like gaining more land, accumulating more gold...and building a pyramid. the pyramid served teh dual purpose of protecting the body of the pharoh from theives and as a stairway to heaven....
Also, it awed people - the magnitude of the construction was so great it terrified people and awed them. Also, it was to show the extent of their worship to the Gods; the bigger the temple, the more you loved them. They built pyramids so as to have a nice resting place in the Afterlife - they thought they would come back and so needed a spacious tomb so as to demonstrate their power in the Afterlife.
