in need of help please!!! multiply -5/6 * -24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20

OpenStudy (oaktree):

If you need an explanation, then you can cancel the negatives. Then multiply and get 5(24)/6, which is (5)(4) which is 20.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay have to show work though

OpenStudy (oaktree):

I just did. You divide by -1, which gives you 5/6 x 24. Then, you multiply them together and you get 5(24)/6. Then you can cancel the 24 and the 6, and the 6 goes away and you have 5(4). That's 20.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

If you want, I can draw it out for you...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

believe it or not I am taking Pre-Algebra, I have been out of school for over 30+ years and this is like taking a foreign language!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that would be most helpful, thanks

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Oh, OK. So, you know that when you multiply 2 negatives, they cancel out, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes got that part

OpenStudy (oaktree):

So, you have 5/6 times 24. Now, first you have to cancel the 6 and the 24. You do that like this:

OpenStudy (oaktree):

I'll draw it for you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you for being patient with me
