Decide whether the equation describes a function. x = 9

OpenStudy (jamesj):

A function like y=y(x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it does, equation of a line is a function (linear)

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Are you in year 9 in HS or something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8th grade

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you are doing rather well for 8th grade, if I do say so myself!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 9 is a vertical line and therefore has infinite solutions, therefore it is NOT a function

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Ok, then in 8th grade, this is not a function. In 8th grade, a function is an equation like y = something involving x like y = 3x - 8 This equation isn't like this and is not a function. What deezil says is exactly right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the set of real numbers not an infinite set, and secondly, for something to be a function, is the only criterion, that it has to have a one-to-one correspondence?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

While I accept JamesJ, that from an eight grade view (y= something involving x)every point on this "function" has a corresponding point on y axis, and therefore is a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A function may NOT have more than one solution for any point x. This is not a function because it has infinite y points at 1 x coordinate. Doesn't matter what level math you are in, it is not a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1316721395918:dw| as shown above the points on the line x=6 have one corresponding point (a, y1)(b,y2) not an infinite no of corresponding y-points.
