OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone help me figure this out ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I assume you attaching something - correct ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes a recipe calls for 2/4 cup of onion and 1/5 chopped celery what is the total amount ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im think i should find a common denominator ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

total amount of onion and celery combined ? first notice that you can reduce the 2/4 , right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes u can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can divide the nominator and denominator by 2, so: 2/4 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

don't reduce it, that's just extra unneccesary work. You need to find GCD in order to make the denominators the same, then just add the numerators and simplify if necessary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the smallest number that is divisible by both 4 and 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pretty much same thing as where fiddle is headed, but just switching early step for later step

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup, now, what's the smallest number that is divisible by both 2 and 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now you have 1/2 + 1/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the greatest common denominator is 10, it can be divided evenly by both 2 and 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, you divide 10 by each denominator, and then take the result for each denominator and multiply by the respective fraction. so: now you should have 1/2 * (5/5) + 1/5 * (2/2) = 5/10 + 2/10 now since they have same denominator, you can just add the numerators to get your answer. Then you can simplify, but in this case it is not necessary, the answer is already in simplest form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my answer is 2/10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5/10 + 2/10 = 7/10 7/10 is answer i think you just forgot the first fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's more than one way to do it but you should always get the same answer in the end
