are there projects to increase the genetic diversity of endangered species by using gene pools held in zoos and institutions worldwide either from living animals or genetic samples?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Of course, they're called breeding programs :) (in the case of live ones anyway). The western swamp tortoise is one such example.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

(sorry I mean captive breeding programs)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im studying the frozen zoo in san diego zoo and the frozen ark in nottingham uk but im interested if there is use of artifical insemmination into the wild population

OpenStudy (trancenova):

And this one is pretty informative too (gives some examples of current usage) http://www.ansci.wisc.edu/jjp1/ansci_repro/misc/project_websites_06/wednesday/endangered_cats/papers/Comizzoli,Mermillod,Mauget.pdf Thanks for the medal :)

near enough exactly what i was looking for, ill have to throw you a copy of my prject once completed. any more info on these programmes with genetic flow from both captive and wild populus will be greatly recieved. im attending a degree in zoology next year and this is my main project for it. im a mature student and im having to stop myself looking far to deep into genetics i.e autozygoisty etc

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Ah I see. Well I google scholar-ed this: http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=artifical+insemmination+endangered+species&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=ws So the link should take you to more useful articles :) I'm not sure I understand "im attending a degree in zoology", Do you mean you are starting your Bachelor next year? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes im based in the UK and am returning to higher education via an access to HE diploma, will be taking a Bachelors degree in zoology next year. this project is 10% of my college credits. that article is fantastic btw, I owe you.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Ah I see :) Not to worry, Google scholar will become your friend, helps you find awesome articles (just have to find the right search terms) :P Starting mature age isn't always easy :) but I wish you lots of luck! :) Feel free to ask any questions :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks and i will be doing for sure. im always seeking the positives and my positive is that im focused and have experience, my learning capabilities havent dwindled at all, im loving every minute of it. im 28 so i have been out of education for roughly 10 years

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Aaah 28 isn't so bad :D and awesome your learning capabilities haven't dwindled - that can often be the hardest part. I'm sure you will do very well especially with focus!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks trance, ill be sure to stay active on this site, and if your lucky ill send over a copy of the project ;)
