What does it mean for a number to be the "solution" to an equation? Give an example of a variable equation and its solution. Explain in complete sentences how you know that number is the solution.
In an equation you say that something (meaning variable) equals something else (a number for example). When you "solve" the equation, you use your mathematical skills to get the variable on one side of the equation (meaning the '=') and non-variables on the other side. When you have this, you know that the rightside is the solution for the variable. Example: variable x used in this equation:\[3x = 15\] To "solve" this equation, we have to get the x on the left side, and only n umbers on the right side, so we devide both lines by 3. \[3x = 15\] devide left and right by 3: \[/3 = /3\] makes \[x = 5\] Now you have found a solution, '5' is a solution for x!
