evaluate (1/2)^-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/(1/2)^5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 1/(1/36)??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, 1/(1/32) -> 32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is what you gave me? http://goo.gl/ETp4J

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats the function right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since the power is negative you make it a fraction so 1/(.5)^5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its not 1/(1/2)^5??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is. .5=1/2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you show your workings?????????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/exponent2.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my example is not there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there something wrong with what i did ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you tell me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sure its right .. but i see you still debate it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it was right, but ritacame gave a another answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is. .5=1/2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

according to ritacame

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what ? how come 5=1/2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

type on your calculator (1/2)^-5 and observe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I asked to see the works but ritacame just posted links.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But thanks for your help coolsector and ritacame.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

according to the last link it is 32 if you wonder about how you get there : (1/2)^-5 since its with - it is : 1/((1/2)^5) now (1/2)^5 = 1/32 1/ (1/32) = 32 remember fraction division is like multiply with the reciprocal so : 1 * 32 = 32
