What is scientific notation?

myininaya (myininaya):

A.BC*10^e is an scientific notation if e is integer and A,B,C are digits of the number A.BC

OpenStudy (turingtest):

scientific notation uses powers of ten to move decimals in order to better write very large and small numbers

OpenStudy (turingtest):

i.e. 500000000000=5x10^11 just count the zeros works the other way too with negative exponents: 6x10^-6=00000.6

OpenStudy (turingtest):

sorry 6x10^-6=0.000006

Scientific notation is just a compact way of writing a number--generally a very big number of a very small number. Instead of having to write out something like 123000000000, we can instead, write this in scientific notation: 1.23 * 10^11. Any number can be thought of a product of a power of 10. Instead of writing 10000, you can write 1*10^4. Instead of writing 0.0001, you can write 1*10^-4. You might also see scientific notation with an "E" in place of the multiplication sign and the 10. For example 0.0129 may be written in scientific notation as: 1.29 * 10-2 OR as 1.29E-2.
