What is the difference between concave and convex shapes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Concave is the shape of a graph when it opens downwards, convex is the shape when it opens upwards. Y=X^2 would be convex where as Y=-X^2 would be concave. An easy way to remember which is which is to think concave as the shape of a cave entrance.

concave -> ) <- convex

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about in relation to shapes though?

OpenStudy (lalaly):

Concave is like a dish when you are looking into it and convex is like a dish when you are looking at the bak of it

^___^ Thanks everyone!!! xD

@jessica_808 are you asking this question for geometry????? If yes, then the answer is different !!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, for Geometry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. In geometry, a convex shape is one in which all the diagonals lie inside the shape and a convex shape is one in which all diagonals do not lie inside the shape. See the next post of mine.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I understand what you mean by diagonals inside of a shape. But could you explain convex a bit more? :)
