can i apply "stress=force/area" in case of contact stress problems??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if load is in contact with surface of any body, then in that case load "stress=force /area of surface in contact"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is point or line contact then?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if stress acts on point it is very large force has acted on very small surface but this stress also depends on weight of load if weight is also small stress will be also less...hence either for point or line contact formula for stress remains same and is "stress=force/area"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there any diff between hertzian stress and simple stress???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

horizontal stress is termed as tangential stress acting parallel to surface whereas stress acting perpendicular(normal) to surface is simply called stress or simple stress

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no...no....i m asking about the bearing stress caused by the friction between the balls & the outer cage of the bearing(hertzian stress)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hertzian contact stress refers to the localized stresses that develop as two curved surfaces come in contact and deform slightly under the imposed loads but simple stress is force acting per unit area.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

stress refers to stress between load and any sort of surface but hertz stress is special case of stress where two bodies with curve surfaces(e.g.sphere) comes in contact
