having problems writing a clear thesis. any tips?
We need to know what the topic of your paper is, and what question the paper will be answering. Your thesis is the answer to that question.
For example, if you are writing a paper about smoking, your question could be "what are the harmful effects of smoking, on the body?" Your thesis could be "Smoking can lead to many health problems, such as asthma, emphesema, and even death."
the question being asked is -- In literature does a character's emotion determine the decisions he makes. My response is... Does a character's emotions determine their next move? In most novels, plays, or other literature emotion is a major factor in the choices made by the character. The book, ... by ..., shows that it is true that the emotion of a character is the first thing they think o while in the middle of a decision. Their emotion is a much bigger contributor to their decision than logic or reason. The character, Asa Breed, in this book was going to be a scientist until he heard about the destruction that the atomic bomb created. Then another character, Philip Castle, would declare his religious beliefs at any time when he knew it was illegal to do so. Does this sound like a good thesis?
Your thesis would be "In most novels, plays, or other literature, emotion is a major factor in the choices made by the characters." Then, you need to prove that in the rest of your writing. Don't ask the question, outright, in your paper. The "question" should be implied.
