Where do people use chromosomes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They are stored in our cells' nucleus, and are used as a template for making proteins

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yah but how are they used in life besides in the cells nucleus?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to make proteins

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

It's a pretty long and complicated process (we spent three weeks going over it in my advanced genetics class), and is split up into two parts; Transcription and Translation. I'll try to make it as simple as possible. A little background info first: Our chromosomes contain the codes which instruct our cells on, essentially, how to keep living. The chromosomes encrypt these codes by using four bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine) to create the codes. The bases are set up in groups of three (codons) with each group coding for a specific amino acid. Now for the fun stuff... Step 1 - Transcription When a specific protein needs to be made, the area of a chromosome that encodes for that protein is unwound (remember, the DNA of the chromosomes is in a double helix formation) and is copied into a strand of mRNA (messenger RNA). The section of DNA is said to have been "transcribed" into a strand of mRNA Step 2 - Translation The strand of mRNA is then fed into a ribosome and "read" by way of tRNA (transfer RNA) to create a long strand of amino acids. This amino acid chain then undergoes a series of folding to form its final structure as a protein Hope this helps. Remember that this is an extremely complicated process (there are entire grad school courses devoted to these processes), and this is an extremely "dumbed down" version of what takes place.
