How do semicolons work. I need an examples of correct usages.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am going to the store; I will buy the bread the bread when I get there.

It basically replaces a "comma and," or a "comma but." For example, the above sentence could be written this way, also... I am going to the store, and I will buy the bread when I get there. Just remember that both sides of the semicolon have to be complete thoughts. The sentence can NOT be written like this... I am going to the store; to buy some bread. "to buy some bread" is not a complete thought. I hope this helps.

The part that follows the semicolon is the reason for the part before. EX: Sentence; reason. EX: Those people are annoying; they never stop talking.

@peeps in a weird way, haiku-like, your sentence makes sence: "I am going to the store; to buy some bread" Other examples of this weird-formed structure woud be "I love life; to be conscious", "looking at the horizon; to breathe", "I am very bright; to make interesting remarks", in which the second part of the sentence (a verb in its infinitive form) serves as a justification for the first statement, as in "I love you; you make me so happy", "This is poetry; it is a new way of looking at words" or "This answer was written by a genius; it makes you wonder and projects your mind towards new levels of thought".

can u pls help me with my question boids!!

Euphonic gave a good answer, you can use a semi colon to state something and then state a cause or reason for it. EX: This sentence is an example of a correct use of semicolons; it states something then explains it. Another use for semicolons is as a comma, for separating items in a list, when those items have internal punctuation. EX: I want to fly; explore the land, the mountains and the seas; roam the desert; let my imagination drive my body, my soul, my mind. Another use is to contrast two sentences inside of a bigger one. State something that says two contrasting things. EX: White is the color of good; black is the color of evil. Be careful though. Kurt Vonnegut (one of the greatest writers to have ever lived) says about semicolons: "Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college." So, to answer, to you question/statement/exclamation "can u pls help me with my question boids!!", yes, yes I can.
