What is a organelle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, have you heard of a nucleus in a eukaryotic cell? well that is considered a 'organelle'. to be brief, a organelle is a part of the cell that plays a important role in functioning. like i said about the nucleus, the nucleus is over the activities of the cell. that is partially it's function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

more simply, the little parts that make up a cell. Like the mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, etc.

Like humans, cells also need specialised structures to carry out metabolic activities, especially unicellular organisms. So the parts of the cell that help it to carry out the various activities, for example digestion, excretion, respiration and so on are called organelles. eg: nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, vacuoles, golgi apparatus or golgi complex
