Why is there no difference between |1 - x| and |x - 1|?

I did not learn this until college but the absolute value sign implies the following: x< 0 is -x x> 0 is x Seems simple but if you apply - to (-1) you get 1. So th answer will always be positive. Where x carries the negative or 1 does within the absolute value sign does not matter.
