The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer, which essentially consists of lipids (fat). within the phospolipid bilayer you can find two types of proteins: peripheral proteins and integrated proteins. integrated proteins are a vital component to the membrane as it facilitates active transportation also known as exocytosis (bringing ions out of the cell) and endocytosis (bringing ions out of a cell). active transportation is important as it helps ions move AGAINST a concentration gradient. Peripheral proteins hang out on the outside of the cell and may be covered by carbohydrates.
