What important information about Biological Membranes should I know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A biological membrane or biomembrane is an enclosing or separating membrane that acts as a selective barrier, within or around a cell. It consists of a lipid bilayer with embedded proteins that may constitute close to 50% of membrane content.[1] The cellular membranes should not be confused with isolating tissues formed by layers of cells, such as mucous and basement membranes. check this one tooo :) http://telstar.ote.cmu.edu/biology/animation/Membranes/membranes.html

The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer, which essentially consists of lipids (fat). within the phospolipid bilayer you can find two types of proteins: peripheral proteins and integrated proteins. integrated proteins are a vital component to the membrane as it facilitates active transportation also known as exocytosis (bringing ions out of the cell) and endocytosis (bringing ions out of a cell). active transportation is important as it helps ions move AGAINST a concentration gradient. Peripheral proteins hang out on the outside of the cell and may be covered by carbohydrates.
