How do you double the value of a fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

double do you mean square it or adding... if you mean squaring you just square the bottom and the top... if adding you just add them together if the denominator is alike

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you mean multiplication you'd just do \[\frac{2}{1}*\frac{1}{2} =1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and multiply straight across

This is the Situation: Your friends Marcus, Bethany, and Tyrone are arguing about how to double the value of a fraction. Marcus says u double the denominator only. Bethany says you double both the denominator and the numerator. Tyrone says only the numerator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Double would be just the numerator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about the denominator if you doubled or squared it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it'd stay the same if you doubled

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so basically doubling means 2 x fraction... and square would mean squaring it\[\frac{2}{1}*\frac{1}{4}=\frac{2}{4}=\frac{1}{2}\] would be doubling

OpenStudy (anonymous):

squaring on the other hand would be \[(\frac{1}{2})^2=\frac{1^2}{2^2}=\frac{1}{4}\]
