what are the differences between mitosis and meiosis?

Mitosis consists of prophase, anaphase, metaphase and telaphase and Meiosis has all of them PLUS prophase II, anaphase II, metaphase II and telaphase II.

or in laymen's terms: Mitosis: Divides chromosomes and creates identical copies Meiosis: Divides and creates a mixture of chromosomes, and results in gametes; which are necessary for sexual reproduction. side note: Gametes = sperm, eggs, etc.)

Mitosis: The somatic cell 4 example divides to 2 new cells with the same number of chromosomes in each cell Miosis : The sexual cell divides to 4 new cells with half number of chromosomes in each cell
