OpenStudy (amistre64):

How can this sentence be improved?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

But government is not a static entity; it seethes and roils under the heft of stagnancy as a woman in travail counting out the days and months in anticipation of a change in her present condition.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Perhaps? But government is not a static entity; it seethes and roils under the heft of stagnancy as [an expectant mother] in travail counting out the days and months in anticipation of a change in her present condition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am by no means an english genius, but I think it's meant to be "But THE Government..."

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we were to specify a particular government, yes. But this is a generalization about any government

OpenStudy (amistre64):

It is a "coo-de-graw" in my journal entry, reflecting upon thoreaus civil disobedience

OpenStudy (amistre64):

But government is not a static entity; it seethes and roils under the heft of stagnancy as an expectant mother in travail counting out the days and months in anticipation of a change in her present condition. And the creation which issues forth from her womb inevitably transforms her into a new being.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im thinking of using "and those of us who suckle at her teet" in there someplace lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

I think this is what I will be content with as my entry: To end my reflecting for the day, I take as my inspiration this excerpt: “Even the Chinese philosopher was wise enough to regard the individual as the basis for the empire” (136). At first read I have to wonder what dear Henry has against the Chinese. I would have at least denoted it as the French instead - Viva la Revolución!! All governments, no matter how despotic, are supported and sustained by the people that they are the stewards of. As long as the people are content to live under the conditions that are imposed upon them, the government will continue to act as it does, doling out its edicts and decrees under the guise of utilitarianism - doing the most good towards the most people. But government is not a static entity; it seethes and roils under the heft of stagnancy as an expectant mother in travail counting out the days and months in anticipation of a change in her present condition. And the creation which issues forth from her womb inevitably transforms her into a new being, replete with greater responsibilities and graver consequences. I would love to use the phrase, “and those who suckle at her teet”, in here someplace but how to construct it into a workable metaphor escapes me at the moment – oh well. In any event, I would say that when those who are given office within government abuse it and lose sight of its proper place within a society, that those being governed will rise up and dethrone it like what is happening in Egypt and Libya and all the other countries that are in an upheaval today. The motive towards the future is a juggernaut that cannot be stopped, only steered and lead by those who have the strength and conviction to hope in something better.
