Does external fertilization happen only in water?

But in hens internal fertilization takes place. The egg is the embryo which is laid only after fusion of gametes takes place and zygote is developed.

looks like it happens in water for animals but can happen in the air for plants

Frogs use a special type of external reproduction called, amplexus. It does not always happen in the water, actually, it mostly happens out of the water. This process occurs when a female frog drops eggs and the male fertilizes them while they are falling.
